Evergreen Cemetery and its handsome brick gatehouse was at the center of the Union line and became a major Union artillery position during the battle, suffering considerable damage. After the war the National Cemetery was established adjactent to the private cemetery, bringing Abraham Lincoln to the dedication with his immortal address.

Today the National Cemetery mingles memorials to Union commanders, batteries and regiments with the headstones of the honored dead. Remember as you walk through them that they are places of reverence.
