Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Howard Avenue

Interactive map of monuments along Howard Avenue on the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg

Twenty-six monuments and markers to Union units and generals and two to Confederate brigades line Howard Avenue just north of Gettysburg. This was the defensive line on July 1st, 1863 of the Union 11th Corps, and the scene of desperate fighting as they were overwhelmed and driven back through town by the Confederate 2nd Corps. Several of the units honored here have a second monument where they reformed and defended Cemetery Hill south of town on July 2nd and 3rd.

Start at the western end off Mummasburg Road and work east - the last half of Howard Avenue is one-way eastbound, forcing drivers to turn onto Harrisburg Road. There is a small parking area at Barlow Knoll.
