Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Rhode Island at the Battle of Gettysburg

Rhode Island sent 21,000 men to the Union Army in the Civil War. It was represented at the Battle of Gettysburg by almost 1,000 men in an infantry regiment and five artillery batteries. There are only four monuments to Rhode Island units on the battlefield, as Batteries C and G of the 1st Rhode Island Artillery were in reserve with the Sixth Corps and did not erect monuments on the battlefield.
