Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Pitzer Woods

Located on the southern end of Seminary Ridge just north of where West Confederate Avenue intersects Millerstown Road, these woods were owned by Samuel Pitzer, whose house still stands in the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

The 1st United States Sharpshooters scouted the woods towards midday on July 2nd and engaged Alabama troops that were gathering there for Longstreet's attack. Later in the afternoon Confederate General Barksdale's Brigade waited in reserve here before its attack toward the Sherfy House.
