Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Union monuments - Pennsylvania Infantry

99th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment

There are two monuments to the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry on the Gettysburg battlefield.

A monument now on Hancock Avenue was the original monument. It was erected by the regimental veteran's Association and dedicated in 1886 at the Devil's Den. When the state made funding available for Pennsylvania regimental monuments in 1889 it was decided to create a new monument on the Devil's Den location. The original monument was moved to the regiment's secondary position on Hancock Avenue.

Location: 39.813502 N, 77.235172 W; see map

The new monument was dedicated at the Devil's Den in 1889. The startlingly modern design works in both the diamond symbol of the 3rd Army corps and the keystone symbol of Pennsylvania.

Location: 39.792372 N, 77.242264 W; see map
