52nd New York Infantry Regiment
"German Rangers," "Sigel Rifles"

The monument to the 52nd New York Infantry Regiment is south of Gettysburg on Sickles Avenue. (see map) It was erected by the State of New York in 1893.

The monument is fronted by a a pair of bronze rifles holding a knapsack and canteen, topped by the trefoil symbol of the Second Army Corps.

The 52nd New York was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Lieutenant Colonel Charles G. Freudenberg. He was wounded on July 2nd and Major Edward Venuti took command for a short time until he was killed, after which Captain William Scherrer took command. The 52nd brought 134 men to the field.
