52nd New York Infantry Regiment
"German Rangers," "Sigel Rifles"

The monument to the 52nd New York Infantry Regiment is south of Gettysburg on Sickles Avenue. (see map)

The monument was erected by the State of New York in 1893 and is fronted by a a pair of bronze rifles holding a knapsack and canteen, topped by the trefoil symbol of the Second Army Corps.

The regiment was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Charles G. Freudenberg until he was wounded on July 2. Major Edward Venuti then took command for a short time until he was killed. Captain William Scherrer then took command of the regiment.

The 52nd brought 134 men to the field.
