Looking southwest from Wainwright Avenue up East Cemetery Hill. The Evergreen Cemetery gatehouse is at the top of the hill to the right of the monument, behind the monument to the 4th Ohio Infantry Regiment. The attack by the Confederate brigades of Hoke and Hays in the evening of July 2 overran the Union line at this point and carried to the artilery positions at the top of the hill before being thrown back by a Union counterattack.
