It was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Selden Connor who, like his famous counterpart in the 20th Maine, went on to become a general and the governor of the state. Connor also designed the monument.
The 7th Maine suffered six wounded during the battle.
The monument was erected in 1889 by the State of Maine.
