The regiment was commanded at Gettysburg by Colonel Samuel J. Williams. It brought 339 men to the field, and lost 27 killed, 133 wounded and 50 missing. It was part of 1st Corps - 1st Division - 1st Brigade.
This 62% casualty rate is evidence of the vicious fighting along Willoughby Run and the fighting retreat to Seminary Ridge on July 1st, where the 19th Indiana served as the left flank of the brigade.
The 19th is also honored by a monument and marker at Antietam.
