Looking East, the Headquarters Marker for the First Division, First Corps, Army of the Potomac marker at Gettysburg stands just north of Chambersburg Road, seen on the right of the photo. The road was the main way to Gettysburg for much of the Confederate Army, and General Robert E; Lee made his headquarters on July 2 and 3 on the ridge behind the monument. The ridgeline to the right is the grounds of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, whose Schmucker Hall provided a lookout post for both armies. |
