Delaware sent over 12,000 men to the Union Army in the Civil War in nine regiments of infantry, one each of cavalry and heavy artillery, and in one battery of light artillery. Of these, two Delaware infantry regiments fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, totalling more than 480 men. Over 160 - one third - became casualties. Delaware also has a state monument near the National Cemetery. One of the Army of the Potomac's corps commanders, Major General George Sykes, was a native of Delaware.
