From the monument: C.S.A. The Texas Brigade consisted of three Texas and one Arkansas infantry regiments. It was commanded by Brigadier General Jerome Bonaparte Robertson until he was wounded on July 2nd. 1st Texas Infantry, commanded by Lt. Col. P. A. Work, engaged 426 men in 12 instead of the usual 10 companies. It lost 29 killed, 46 wounded, and 22 missing or captured. 4th Texas Infantry was commanded by Colonel J.C.G. Key until he was wounded on July 2nd. Lt. Col. Benjamin F. Carter briefly took over but was also wounded, leaving Maj. J.P. BaneIt in command. The 4th engaged 415 men and lost 28 killed, 53 wounded, and 31 missing or captured. 5th Texas Infantry was commanded by Colonel R. M. Powell until he was wounded (and later captured) on July 2nd. Lt. Colonel King Bryan was also wounded almost immediately after, leaving Maj. S.C. Rogers in command. The 5th engaged 409 men and lost 54 killed, 112 wounded, and 45 missing or captured. 3rd Arkansas Infantry, commanded by Colonel Van H. Manning, engaged 479 men. It lost 43 killed, 101 wounded, and 40 missing or captured. From the nearby Texas State Monument: "From near this spot the Texas Brigade at about 4:30 p.m. on July 2 crossed Emmitsburg Road and advanced with Hood's Division across Plum Run toward Little Round Top. The Texas Brigade after severe fighting on the slopes of Little Round Top retired to a position on the south side of Devil's Den. The Brigade then fell back to a position near this memorial on the evening of July 3. On the field at Gettysburg the Texas Brigade suffered 597 casualties." |
