Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

State of Georgia CSA flag

The Georgia monument is southwest of Gettysburg on West Confederate Avenue. (see map)

In 1961 Georgia erected identical statues on the battlefields of Gettysburg and Antietam honoring her Confederate veterans. Dedicated in September of that year, the monument is near where General Semmes' Georgia Brigade began its attack toward the Wheatfield on July 2nd.

Georgia provided over 13,000 men to the Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg, including the Army's second in command, James Longstreet. It lost over 2,700 casualties in the battle.

From the monument:

Georgia Confederate Soldiers
We sleep here in obedience;
When duty called, we came;
When country called, we died.
