Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

State of Arkansas CSA flag

The State of Arkansas monument is southwest of Gettysburg on West Confederate Avenue. (see map)

The monument was dedicated on June 18, 1966, and stands where the 3rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment formed up with Robinson's Texas Brigade for the assault on July 2nd. An unusual feature of the monument are the four aluminum blocks bearing the Confederate battle flag on at the corner of each base, representing Arkansas' early role as a producer of aluminum.

Distant Arkansas provided only one regiment to the Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg. It totaled about 480 men and lost 41 killed, 101 wounded, and 40 missing, or over one third of the men engaged.

From the monument:

The grateful people of the
State of Arkansas erect this
memorial as an expression of
their pride in the officers and
men of the Third Arkansas
Infantry Confederate States
Army, who by their valor
and their blood have
made this ground
forever hallowed.
